After seeing the trailer for this movie, I had put it off until it was released on DVD/Blu-Ray. I had thought that it was going to be another dumb movie about how the world is going to end. I had thought that the director exaggerated some of the scenes to hype up the movie and scare the living crap out of everyone.
Well, after renting it it last week, I was glad that I didn’t go see this movie at the theater. While watching the movie, I wasn’t sure if I should laugh or be horrified about what’s going to happen to us in 2012. It didn’t seem like a serious movie. Although, it should be.
There’s no question that the filmmaker spent a lot of money on the awesome special effects. I mean, in reality, do you really think that a limo would actually have the speed to dodge falling concrete, people, fireballs, bridges, cars, and a giant donut??? Heck no!
There are a lot of flaws in that movie. The scene where the limo jumped across a bridge, without sustaining any damage to the vehicle or anybody inside of it, was one of them. With my Mythbusters knowledge, I know that stunt would be impossible in real life unless a rocket is attached to that limo. One of the not-so-obvious scenes (to those that has no knowledge of what a major solar flare is capable of) was the fact that there were still electricity available everywhere! In reality, if a major solar flare penetrates through our magnetosphere, there will be mass blackouts all over the world. There will no be GPS service because all of the satellites will be toast.
In conclusion, I’m giving this movie a six out of ten stars because of it’s special effects. It didn’t do enough to scare me about the 2012 doomsday. I wouldn’t recommend anybody renting this movie unless they are totally drunk.
